Greetings from Huntington Avenue! The school year has drawn to a close
and we are enjoying the spring. Our young men have continued to take
care of their academic business and spring practice was a success in
many ways.
One of the main goal for spring ball is to improve the teams fundamental
execution while developing the necessary depth to compete. We made
steady progress on both offense and defense. Additionally, we placed
heavy emphasis on the special teams. What has been the most encouraging,
is the improvement of our younger players and the greater understanding
of ourselves. The first year players that have stepped forward and
performed this spring are John Griffin at tailback, Greg Abelli at wide
receiver and Jason Lane at offensive guard. This has helped our
offensive depth in many ways. Defensive newcomers that helped to elevate
play were Darryl Jones, a defensive safety and Mike Laperriere at
Outside Linebacker. Others that have been progressing to help us for the
fall are Alex Broomfield at tailback, Mike Lukenda at defensive line,
Matt Allain at offensive guard, Greg Niland at offensive tackle, David
Akinniyi at outside linebacker and Jason Vega at defensive end. I
believe an excellent
foundation has been laid for our 2008 season.
Academically, we had another fine semester. Our team GPA is 2.88 for the
spring and 17 guys made the football honor roll. Seventeen may seem
small as compared to the 30 who were on it in the fall but we had nearly
30 people on Co-Op this spring. We are continuing to improve our
classroom performance and our Student Athlete Support Services program
has made a huge difference for our young men. Lauren De-
Santis and Gavin Potter play a vital role in our athletic program and
for that we are grateful.
As we move forward with the first summer session our assistant coaches
are on the road for spring recruiting. We would like to encourage you to
check out the Annual Husky Golf Classic on May 21st and the Friends of
NU Athletics Golf Outing on June 9th. Enjoy the warm weather and GO
HUSKIES! Rocky Hagar
